**A SPECIAL UPDATE ON JACE AND A GREAT BIG THANK YOU** Jace was diagnosed with congenital megaesophagus in September. What this means is that the muscles in Jakes esophagus dont work, so his food doesnt get pushed down to his tummy and sits in his esophagus, only to be regurgitated. Dogs with megaesophagus regurgitate multiple times a day and go through choking spells. They are also very vulnerable to aspiration pneumonia, which can be fatal. Jaces condition is life threatening, but with careful management and a special milkshake type diet, he can have quality of life for as long as his body can adjust. We have no way of knowing how long that will be. Most dogs with congenital megaesophagus will succumb to aspiration pneumonia or starvation. Jace is a sanctuary dog in our rescue, with his foster mom, Susan Watson. Susan and her entire family support Jaces condition daily, which is demanding, but they love this sweet boy and are moved by his spirit and love of life. One of the modifications they have made for Jaces care is vertical feeding, which helps his food travel through his esophagus to his belly. Several people donated money to purchase Jace a Bailey Chair, a special feeding chair for dogs with Jaces condition. Although Jace is not a fan of the chair, he is adjusting. Thank you to all who have donated for Jaces care! We would also like to give a very special thank you to Susan, her husband, Zave, and their three children for embracing the daily care required for Jace, for making him feel so loved, and for giving him the life of a normal, happy dog whenever possible. Susan, we are so blessed to have you in our TPA family! Hats-off to Jace and the Watson family for your strength and perseverance!
