A miner`s charity ! . A miner was a working man, and he was poorly paid, But a miner`s generosity, was easily displayed, Not only did he work and slave, to keep his family, But other people gained a lot, as from this verse you`ll see. The miner gave a contribution from his weekly wage, To help the good folk in his village, in this needy age, There was `widows funds`, and `childrens treats`, ` pennies for the poor,` Paid for them by mining men, to keep starvation from the door. We paid towards the `ambulance, we paid towards the `school`, We paid towards the `hospital`, with tuppence in the `pool`, We paid towards the `orphans home` we gave them little treats, And at christmas time we fed them all, and gave them lots of sweets. We contributed weekly, and we bought land to build, For schools and universities, for ambition to be filled, We put up swings and roundabouts, where kids could run and play, We did all this, and gladly, - all from a miner`s pay. We had our local hospital, we paid for nurses there, We paid for `convalescent homes` by the bracing briny air, We paid towards salvation, with chapels on the hill, Where we would go, to be with God, when all was calm and still. The things that I have stated here, are only small in part, Of what I miner paid towards those who were closest to his heart, For although the man was poorly paid, his charity was good, Because looking after everyone, - was in a miner`s blood !.
