(A small detour on a Tuesday afternoon) Wondering what I am doing here, I reread Bruce Chatwins book with the same question in the title. He writes about the South African composer Kevin Volans: On returning from Africa he was bitterly disappointed to discover he was neither African nor European. Soon he realized that he was free, free to compose whatever he wanted. There is a Sufi saying, “Freedom is absence of choice.” I believe this to be devotional music of the highest order. For me, Kevin is one of the more inventive composers to appear since the death of Stravinsky. I try to find an old cassette tape. I remember going to the library in Utrecht about 20 years ago to borrow the CD and record it on tape. I cant find the tape but there is Youtube these days. I find my favorite song. I listen.
