-ALECO- Dear SMEC: We learned during the Power Forum with Secretary Petilla on August 15 that your motive for joining the scheme to privatize ALECO is the recovery of some P500 million the cooperative owes you. We do understand your desire to get back your money but you have a very dangerous motive, at least for us Albayanos. Why? Once you get your P500 million, you will just pack up and leave. Yes, there are terms in the contract that you might say will bar you from doing that but you and your accomplices can create a scenario that will justify your departure. Why not? It was done before. Privateers created the scenario of ALECO’s financial and technical woes and used it to justify privatization. If recovering your P500 million is your sole motive, then we advise you to withdraw your proposal. With C2C, you will get your money just the same. It’s a win-win arrangement. You get your money. The people of Albay will not be burdened with high price of electricity. Privatization will not threaten other electric cooperatives. ALECO will be rehabilitated to the Triple A status of BENECO. Do not ever believe our Governor Joey Salceda when he says that C2C will be unable to collect from consumers. With C2C, ALECO can collect because BENECO will manage the former and the latter has 99% collection efficiency and only 9% systems loss. The key to BENECO’s very high collection efficiency is its intellectual property Automatic Meter Reading, Billing and Collection System which is already installed in ALECO. On the other hand, SMEC has no experience in managing a distribution utility. Of course, with C2C some parties will be sad. They will not have leverage to solicit funds from SMEC during elections. Their skeletons hidden in the closet will be uncovered. The missing BCARE fund worth P250 million will be finally traced. The mismanagement of ALECO in the past will be brought to light. The culprits behind the theft of money and electricity will be brought to justice. Yes, all these will mean problems to them. However, these are their problems, not ours. If you have another motive like profiting from the privatization of ALECO, then you will be transgressing corporate social responsibility. A decent company should never profit from the misery of 1.2 million people for 25-50 years. For doing so you would earn the ire and resistance of present and future inhabitants of our province. We can mount a boycott of your San Miguel products. Believe us, we can do without San Mig Light, your frozen chicken, etc. You may profit from ALECO but will certainly lose much in San Miguel Corporation. You will be like the US entering Vietnam in 1965 or Iraq in 2003. The numbers are simply against you coming into ALECO. So, what do you think? Have you come to your senses? We hope you do. Very sincerely yours, Albayanos
