#ANEEJ, monarch’s brother condemn Edo Assembly crisis MEMBERS of the Edo State House of Assembly must seek the interest of the masses in their actions and reactions by ending the crisis plaguing their parliament, the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) said in Benin City yesterday. A statement by the ANEEJ Executive Director, Rev. David Ugolor, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Abubarkar Mohammed, to immediately restructure the security network in the state, which alleged, has crippled residents’ economic activities. Similarly, the younger brother of the Benin Monarch, Prince Edun Akenzua, has urged all parties to the crisis to obey the law. He told newsmen yesterday: “Whether I feel rightly or wrongly about the law, the first thing is to obey it. “There is commotion in that place. I was told that some people have been suspended, if it is their right to do so, then those suspended should remain suspended and appeal it if they think otherwise. No matter how bad a law is, it remains in force until repealed.” Meanwhile, a factional Speaker of the Assembly, Uyi Igbe, has denied media reports that the 15 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers were meeting at the Governor’s Office, stating rather that they were meeting at the House of Assembly Annexe. “Such reports are not only patently false and mischievous but another phase in what is now clearly a coordinated assault on the legislature in Edo State by desperate anti-democratic forces, thereby eroding its integrity,” Igbe said in a statement yesterday. “As a temporary measure, the state assembly had to move its plenary to the old Legislative Chamber so that normal proceedings would continue pending the completion of the repair of the Anthony Enahoro House, which was willfully vandalized last week by the suspended Festus Ebea and his cohorts, aided by some unpatriotic policemen. “They had forcibly broken in, in fragrant disobedience to a valid court order restraining them from the precincts of the assembly.” According to Ugolor, failure to address the blockage of routes leading to the city’s commercial nerve centre may further threaten the security situation, as the plight of the people whose businesses were being disrupted calls for concern. “We are particularly worried that the way security operatives have blocked the King’s Square and prevented the free flow of vehicular and human traffic have visited untold hardship on Edo people and adversely affected economic activities and citizens’ livelihood,” he said. Describing the happenings in Edo State as “pre- election problem,” he noted: “As we are preparing for the presidential election next year, we expect this kind of happening across the country, especially in areas the ruling party may not win.” Source: ngrguardiannews/news/national-news/170029-group-monarch-s-brother-condemn-edo-assembly-crisis For Details: Please...
