“Actors are the only honest hypocrites. Their life is a voluntary dream; a studied madness. The height of their ambition is to be beside themselves. Today kings, tomorrow beggars. They show us all that we are, all that we wish to be, and all that we dread to be.” [William Hazlitt] After a rare snowfall in Tuscany, many hundreds of years ago, the great Florentine grandee Piero de’Medici is said to have commissioned Michelangelo to create for him a sculpture in snow. Michelangelo’s snowman was reputed to have been his greatest work, but you had to have been there to see it. It was as evanescent and inimitable as a theatre performance, and just like a great night in the theatre, it lived on only in the memory, melting away like a snowman. I know it’s impossible to hold on for long to what it is that we love in the world, but look at us now, gathered together this evening at the theatre - a community, a *family*, under the stars. Look how happy we are! An ensemble of hugely gifted performers, strong of spirit and generous of heart, worked on their audience’s imaginary forces every night to immense effect, no matter the climate – heat-wave or thunderstorm, spring shower or fog. If their task were to fashion a snowman from a handful of ice in the dog days of a hot January, they could do it, and you would believe it. Our true intent, they seem to say, is all for your delight. Before I’m lost to time forever, like that Tuscan snowman, I want to say *I was here*. Or so the story goes… Huge congratulations to all at Sport for Jove! Five years of mighty achievements. Long may you live, and prosper!
