(Adapted from a post on my personal FB page) Come join the Supporters of SAHA (SOS) Saturday at the Watauga County Library meeting room at 10:30 AM. This is an opportunity to get involved in the struggle to save Horn in the West and help Hickory Ridge Living History Museum - both managed by the non-profit Southern Appalachian Historical Association. If you cant attend, please sign the online petition by Sept. 17 at: gopetition/petitions/supporters-of-saha.html Also it is very important to write the mayor and town council members ASAP! They do notice how many letters and emails they receive! Their email links are here on a Town of Boone webpage: townofboone.net/mayor/mayor.php Come attend the Town Council meeting on Sept. 18 to show your support of SAHA (and The Horn and Museum). Your presence will matter! Politicians pay attention when their electorate shows up in significant numbers! That is common knowledge! The meeting starts at 5:30 PM but come by 4:45 PM! Horn in the West and Hickory Ridge Living History Museum have made a huge difference in the life of my own family and of many other local families. In addition they have a significant impact on our economy and are known throughout the nation! After all, Horn in the West is the third oldest outdoor drama in America! We want to make sure the Town of Boone mayor and council members grow in their understanding of their need to work cooperatively with SAHA. There are opportunities here to solve problems and work together to improve the Horn and Hickory Ridge. I believe this is the time to shore up these organizations rather than tear them down and that we, as a community, must be active and obviously present to make sure this happens! Those who know me have seen me work in this community, and larger region, for decades as a musician, a teacher, and a preserver of mountain traditions and folklore. I wouldnt be involved in this struggle if I didnt believe in the value and worth of these organizations and also in the sincere attempts of the SAHA people to follow the 22 pages of regulations (that was how many pages that were on the only draft that Ive been able to find online) that were given for them to follow as part of the licensing agreement. I have compared those 22 pages to the Jewish Law - impossible for anyone to follow perfectly!!! I also heard firsthand during the CRAB board meeting this past Monday that neither the CRAB board (Cultural Resources Advisory Board) nor SAHA was given a copy of the revised license! Yes! I heard that said! Now who dropped the ball there? Was it the Cultural Resources director, or the town lawyer, or the town manager, or some other person or agency? That is symptomatic of the multiple missteps made in this sad saga! SAHA is the only keeper of our revolutionary and colonial heritage in Boone that provides public programming. How can the children and parents of our community, as well as the thousands of tourists who visit here, learn about their history and heritage if we do not support SAHA?
