Taxila: Smuggling of wheat, flour to Afghanistan foiled. Najam March 10, 2008 0. • FROM THE NEWSPAPER –Dawn.NEWS Published 2011-02-03 04:25:44 TAXILA, Feb 2: Another jewellery shop was looted at gunpoint in broad daylight in Nawababad bazaar in the jurisdiction of Wah Cantonment police station on Wednesday. This prompted the traders and shopkeepers of Wah Cantonment to block G.T. Road for over two hours to register their protest against growing crime in the area and police failure to protect their life and property. Police sources said at around 12 noon four Afghan nationals came to the city’s busy business centre Nawababad and entered a jewellery shop posing as customers. They then held the jeweller hostage and fled with the looted booty of 50 tola gold ornaments valuing Rs2.30 million. Soon after the incident, the shopkeepers and traders of the area gathered at the market and announced complete shutter down to register their protest against the growing lawlessness. Later the charged shopkeepers marched towards G.T. Road and blocked it by placing stones and burning tyres. They chanted slogans against the police and administration and demanded immediate transfer of the police officials of the area. Addressing the protesters the leaders of different traders associations expressed their concern over the growing lawlessness. They said political appointments had made police officials least concerned about the law and order situation. They said vehicle lifting, theft and robberies had become a common feature in the city. They said even the second robbery within 72 hours could not move the police and make them patrol the area and trace the culprits. On getting information DSP Raja Taifoor Akhtar reached the scene of the protest along with a heavy contingent of police, and after successful negotiations with the protesters restored the traffic.
