Again thanks to all the new likes. We are in the process of recruiting a new sports massage therapist and this looks like it could happen in the few days so watch out for this and we will let you know more as we get closer. Anterior Knee pain & Shin Pain We seem to be seeing more and more anterior knee pain and shin pain over the last few weeks this correlates with the increased number of half and full marathons that runners are completing. It is important with both these conditions in terms of prevention to make sure you have the appropriate trainers in place this doesn’t always mean changing brand, if you have used a make of trainer for some time and have not experienced pain problems then stick with that brand. In other words if it isn’t broke dont try and fix it!!! Often going into a new style or brand of shoe can cause problems if you o then introduce them gradually over a 2-3 week period doing shorter mileage and then gradually building. Other areas of prevention are simple things like hydration and appropriate recovery in terms of both active recovery and rest. What I mean by this is that it is important to give the body a rest from impact and avoid loading the legs with activity which causes impact on a day on day basis. So make sure you have a balance between none weight bearing or none impact exercise such as swimming and cycling as well as running and team sport and racket sports which cause impact. The final aspect of lower limb injury is often what is happening in and around the gluteal area the glut max and med are important muscles influencing the lower limb biomechanics so keeping these toned up can be hugely beneficial I will post a couple of gluteal strengthening exercises later which are useful for this. Remember if you do get pain then be very careful, running through pain is often the wrong path to follow. Equally if you do get soreness, rest and stretch and give the chance for the pain ease before exercising again. If the problem persists then we are always available to give advice.
