“All My Children” began its 41 year run on this date in 1970. Today, not even ONE of those children call or write. The shows primary home was ABCs TV-23, part of the campus on West 66th Street that began as a single studio when ABC (previously the Blue Network) was spun off from NBC, and by November 1948 was required to move out of 30 Rock. That first ABC studio space had served for fifty years as a horse stable. In 1901, Durland’s Riding Academy was home to over 600 horses. In the 1930s, the 100 ft by 200 ft facility operated as the private, elite New York Riding Club. The cavernous riding ring was even equipped for night polo. In the earliest days as a TV studio technicians reported the former stables still had birds occasionally flying into camera range.
