(Apr 17) A Celebration of Life, Love and Friendship for The Reverend Percy Tuesday was held Friday evening at the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre in Winnipeg. Many of Manitobas best musicians gathered to pay homage to the The Reverend, a 2014 Manitoba Aboriginal Music Hall of Fame inductee. The never ending lineup of talent was a whos who of Manitobas Indigenous community, taking to the stage included; C-Weed, Winston Wuttunee, Billy Joe Green, Al Desjarlais, Vic Monkmon (of Red Wine), Clint and Tom Dutiaume and several others. Visiting musicians included; Vince Fontaine (of Eagle & Hawk), Fred Mitchell, Lucian Spence, Kimberly Dawn and Jack Meade amongst others. The evening concluded with a traditional honour song by Ray Co-Co Stevenson and a traditional blanket presentation. Percy was seated with the blanket draped over his shoulders as hundreds of people lined up to hug or shake the Reverendss hand. Many of Percys relatives from his home territory of the Big Grassy First Nation in Ontario travelled to Winnipeg for the gathering. The special event was organized shortly after Percy was unfortunately diagnosed with later stage cancer. A Celebration of Life, Love and Friendship was a fitting tribute to Percys musical and personal legacy as both a musician who toured with the legendary Feathermen in the late 60s and to his work as an additions councillor who has literally assisted in improving the lives of hundreds of Anishinaabe people with a traditional philosophy and Medicine Wheel teachings. Percy has never been comfortable with the title of Elder, but there is no question that he has achieved the title, particularly when the community demonstrates its love and respect in a big way yo.
