#Archaeology Lovers - Have you seen the elephant mosaic discovered last year decorating a late Roman (5th century) synagogue at Huqoq in Israels Galilee? SHARE IF YOU WISH YOU COULD GO ON A DIG! The elephants with shields are battle elephants. They apparently are intended to indicate that the army depicted in the mosaic is Greek, as battle elephants became identified with Greek armies in the East (Near East/Middle East) after Alexander the Greats conquests. The cartoonish nature of the elephants depiction suggests that the artist who made the mosaic never saw a real elephant. - Dr. Jodi Magness, consulting expert on #JerusalemFilm, who has led the dig in Huqoq since 2011.
