“Are you ok?” I asked as I paddled up to a distressed swimmer - TopicsExpress

“Are you ok?” I asked as I paddled up to a distressed swimmer in the middle of San Francisco Bay. He was in a swim event and he’d made it halfway to the Aquatic park shore, starting from Alcatraz island. I let him clutch the front of my kayak to rest for a moment. “I’m swimming hard, but I don’t feel like I’m making any progress.” he said disappointingly. “Are you kidding me?” I said. “It’s courageous what you’re doing. You’ve come so far already. Look, you’re halfway there! Sometimes there are undercurrents you don’t see that make it harder, but if you just keep swimming, you’ll eventually get there.” He was quiet for a moment, then looked around. He took a deep breath and said “Yeah, you’re right. I’m halfway there already. I’ll keep swimming.” He smiled and nodded a “thanks”, and swam towards shore. I thought about how that applies to life sometimes. We’re swimming in the middle of an ocean towards shore. Sometimes it gets really hard, it’s difficult to see where we’re heading. We’re frustrated or disappointed that we’re not making any progress. We forget how far we’ve come already. We’ll eventually get there if we just keep going.
