I can go for free because Im over 60, said George. And I keep thinking about all the things Id like to take. Her father was a Navy commander, and she always thought shed grow up and work for him. We were always out on the water, and it was just part of the way we grew up, said George. Her father was killed in a shipping accident when she was 14, but the Navy bug never left her. I went and signed up in October of 1960 when I was two months into being 18 years old, said George. After boot camp, I was sent to (Washington) D.C. I was a yeoman — which is basically a secretary — at the Naval Intelligence School. While stationed in Washington, George met her husband, Bob — a U.S. Marine from Monette — 53 years ago. Dec. 31 marked the 53rd anniversary of their first date, which took place on New Years Eve.
