“Average & usual entertainers being celebrated…. And, Good films & Different attempts being left unsupported & unnoticed by the audience!!” Subscribe at fb/BoxOfficeBoss to read more interesting articles on Tamil cinema, to read latest cinema information… Cinema fans do subscribe..!! We are going to the theatres to have some entertainment, that’s right! But, in the recent time, only average films are becoming huge hits. Good films and Different attempts are seeing failures continuously. When films like #ThangaMeenkal are struggling to make a 10 days run at the theatres, average entertainers like #Varuthapadaatha_Vaalibar_Sangam are running HOUSEFULL till date. Two films were released last Friday, #Raja_Rani and #Onaayum_Aattukuttiyum. First one is a usual romantic comedy flick; Even though the film does not have anything new, the film has a package of sentiments, comedy and romance which could entertain you. The film has been produced by very big production companies, has big stars and is been released with humongous promotions. The later is a good cinema and a different attempt made in a very low budget with no heroine, no songs and no comedy track. But, the film has not even got 10% of response received by #RajaRani which is running HOUSEFULL for the past 5 days in more than 30 theaters in Chennai alone. The crowd for ‘ONAAYUM AATTUKUTTIYUM’ in a theater at Chennai on Sunday was just less than 50 members. Few of them might ask ‘Why are you blaming films like RAJA RANI?’ So, who else to blame when our people are masala retards and attracted only towards entertainers?? YES, people need Entertainers to de-stress themselves; but, here people are celebrating only these kinds of movies and they are not minding about good films actually. While writing review for ‘RAJA RANI’, I did not write about a few flaws and lags in the film. There are many such small, small flaws in the film. Since the film’s technically good and because it entertains despite having nothing new, I did not write much about those things in this debutant’s work. But, seeing a very ordinary, usual love story being celebrated so big, I can’t stop myself from writing this. The most important thing for a love story like ‘RAJA RANI’ is the weight-age of the right emotions and the bonding between the couples. But that is seen only in the hero-heroine’s chemistry, but not anywhere in the scenes or story. There are no proper / strong reasons shown for how a ‘Born with silver spoon’ type girl like #Nayanthara falls for a poor guy like #Jai. Will she just love him because he says ‘You look cute and beautiful’ the first time they meet, or just with an age-old cinema philosophy saying that ‘Girls like innocent boys much than manly ones!’? And still, their love does not look that fresh. That too, the scenes like where Nayanthara waits at the Registrar office from 7am till 7pm are much dramatic and stupid actually. #Arya-#Nazriya love portion was weaker than this. The scenes where Arya follows her continuously and Nazriya avoiding him and insulting him are all ok, but later they had shown it like she had also loved him from beginning which made her role a usual Tamil cinema’s heroine role. Nazriya’s orphan sentiment scenes are all dated 20 years back. All these can be given an excuse… But Arya who lives in the memory of his girlfriend for more than 4 years, asks his friend ‘Dei machaan, ivalai eppadi da correct pannurathu?’ just in 10 days after their marriage, which totally questions the love of Arya-Nazriya and makes his character weak and unstable. There are many such clichés and melodramas in the film. After all, the film had drawn major inspirations from #Mounaraagam, #Sillunu_Oru_Kadhal, #Milana (Kannada). Even the dialogue ‘Naan onnum azhuvalaiye, Kannu verkkuthu’ has been ripped from the song lyrics ‘I am not crying, My eyes are just a little sweaty today’ from a Television series ‘Flight of the Conchords’. But despite all these minuses, the film has no major boredom scenes with any violence and vulgarity, resulting in a clean film for family audience. On the other hand, ‘Onaayum Aattukuttiyum’ is a very intense film, a sincere attempt. It is a story about a murderer who regrets for one of his mistake and decides to change the purpose of his whole life itself. Only Mysskin can do such a fantastic film, where everyone in the cinema hall can feel and realize both the wolf and lamb in them! The film had #Myskinn’s golden touches all through the film like in the scene where the lamb worships the Vinayakar in the railway station, the police constable saluting the criminal to save his life, the last drops of water in the hands of the dead police officer, the extra-ordinary cemetery scene and the climax. The film had only one minus, #Thambaa - the villain’s dramatic characterization and his annoying reactions and acting. Ilaiyaraja’s awesome music and the cinematography which had many novel, experimental shots are a very big plus point for the film. In all aspects, this film is a very important attempt in Tamil cinema; an honest attempt which does not have any unwanted commercial elements like heroine, songs or comedy track. Making such a film fail at the box office with less than 50 people at theaters is all that we could do for a good film-maker. In the recent time, our audience has got a thought like ‘Directors who do not do commercial films and Directors who cannot make comedy films are wasting their time’. Directors like #Bala, #Mysskinn, #Raam and #Selvaraghavan are all called #Psychos and #Fools by a few set of audience here. Is that really difficult for them to do films in which ‘comedians help the hero in his love till the climax’? Is that much difficult for them to give a second half where the hero and comedian cries in the TASMAC and dances for a love failure song?? (Yes, ‘LOVE FAILURE’ is the most burning problem in the country and we can’t do a film without TASMAC.) Myskinn could have placed a ‘Yellow Saree’ dance like his previous films and could have brought crowd to theatres. Or he could have replaced that transgender character with a heroine, adding 4, 5 unwanted love scenes. He could have even added a comedian character like #Santhanam in the travel of the wolf and lamb forcibly. (Even directors like #Cheran and #Gautham_Vasudev_Menon who have not used comedians in their films in the past 10 years have made SANTHANAM’s comedy an addition to their films; MYSKINN is one of those very few directors who do not need him.) Myskinn could have done any of the above commercial compromises to make his film a HIT, but he did not do that wishing to give only a good product to his audience. According to me, MYSSKIN is a fool! Yes, he has become a fool who has made a wrong hope on our audience. Like director BALA, a fool who made #PARADESI and Director RAAM, another who fool who made #Thangameenkal hoping that ‘People will appreciate good attempts’. It won’t have taken much time for MYSKINN to sell his ‘ONAAYUM AATTUKUTTIYUM’ to #UTV_MotionPictures (who produced his previous film) and could have released it with huge promotions. (We even saw some average movies releasing in the name of ‘Good films’, like #6_Candles and #Maryan. These films had very big promotion campaigns claiming to be ‘New line cinema’ and the ‘Best films in recent times’.) MYSKINN just did one thing, believing in the audience; and YES, we have deceived him! What else can we do…? VARUTHAPADAATHA VAALIBAR SANGAM and DESINGU RAJA are still running in the theaters; Come, let’s go watch it once again. Long Live Tamil Cinema & Audience! - Written by Rahman.A.K (fb/rahman.machinist)
