“BEGINNINGS” REBUILDING THE REAL TEMPLE Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me. Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabels hand. For these seven lamps represent the eyes of the LORD that search all around the world. Can you imagine the first group that laid the first block of the Great Wall of China? You struggle with the heavy block and finally get it set in place just right. Then the foreman says, “OK guys, now we need to finish 5500 miles, 6259 sections of wall. The time of small beginnings leads to great accomplishments. When that happens under our Great Foreman, Jesus Christ, the outcome can be even greater. The Lord rejoices to see the “plumb line” in our hands, always careful to do everything decently and according to the plan. He rejoices to see the work begin. We are carrying on the work of Zerubbabel, only the project has changed a little. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” We have a temple to build both individually and collectively. Some translations read “all of you together are the temple of God”. A measuring rod or plumb line is used to check us against the standard, God’s standard, but at the same time we are not to be discouraged or disappointed the small beginnings. Just keep moving forward and making progress, and some day you will look back and there are miles of wall behind you. You may say, “but it is the work of the Lord, not my work”. God says “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”, and He says, “But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his practices and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of his Creator.” Scriptures such as this indicate we have our responsibility to build the temple and constantly measure with the plumb line, yet not despise the progress and appreciate the small beginnings. Even the middle and end may seem small and insignificant to us, but others, and especially God, probably see it differently.
