*** BEING HORMONAL *** *** PART 1 *** My eldest daughter turns 15 today! Apart from a few bits from TopShop, some perfume and a new sketch pad, Iāve bought her a copy of the film āKevin & Perry Go Largeā. I didnāt quite get that whole series when it was out, I didnāt have teenage kids then, but I can soooooo relate to it now and Iām hoping she will too. I also have a daughter that turned 13 in June, twin daughters that turned 10 in March and at the most hormonal end of the line I have a fully developed 4 year old daughter, possessing dramatic tantrums, unbelievable amounts of attitude, a killer stare and unfortunately a mouthful of language that is beyond her years! I think itās fair to say Iām living in a seriously hormonal house! A few years after the birth of my twins I found myself struggling with my own hormones. My mood, my skin, my energy levels and my libido all came under attack. Having 4 kids under 5 years old at the time meant I was so busy, so stressed and with so little āmeā time that I literally found getting up in the morning a chore. After seeing an endocrinologist, spending a crazy sum of money and having a huge amount of lab tests done I ended up being prescribed bio-identical hormones at very low dosages. These came in the form of a clear gel that I rubbed topically on my skin a couple of times a day when I was feeling oestrogen deficient. It didnāt really help to be honest and it went against everything that felt right for me. Iād never been a āfix it with a pillā person. Iām an annoying āwhyā person and I wanted to investigate āwhyā I was feeling/acting/looking this way by addressing my life balance, my diet and my exercise and this is exactly what I did. My journey and experiments with a Paleo Diet started around this time and what an incredible difference this new way of eating made to my life. I mean INCREDIBLE. I still eat within a Paleo-Style-Framework and when I go off-plan for too long, the hormonal symptoms return. This post is the first of a 3 part waffle-on about hormones and food. Itās a subject thatās really important to me. In the meantime the following link is so good, will make you smile and may resonate with you in some way, whether you have a teenager or have been one! Hope you enjoy it and remember to think of me and my gang the next time youāre feeling or dealing with hormones!
