Vida Volkert Staff writer for Gallup Independent reports on the 30 foals displaced during roundups end up in Gallup — A dark brown colt lay in the dirt. His back legs were trapped under the fence. He had drawn a semicircle on the ground with his front legs in his numerous attempts to get up. His head and genitals were swarmed with flies. He appeared dead, but made a moaning sound. . Before animal control officers arrived to the livestock business in Yatahey Friday afternoon, the owner of a corral where the colt was being held was ready to lift the colt in his backhoe and dump him in the trash. The livestock owner claimed he did not know the horse was still alive. . Another 29 foals stood near by. The owner told animal control officers that the foals were wild and had been seized recently during the Navajo Nation’s horse roundups. The mothers must have been sold and shipped off to Mexico, he said, but because the young horses weighted less than 700 pounds each, they could not join their mothers in the slaughterhouse....
