#BISA2015 - Panel proposal - Performativity and the Words of Inequality: Naturalising Inequalities through Discourse #Performativity has recently gained in strength in international studies as both an #epistemology and a methodology for #discourse analysis. A performative approach argues that discourses do not only describe a (pre-discursive) world but rather constitute or enact it as some-‘thing’ exterior and pre-existing to the discourses themselves. As such, performative processes play an important role in the creation of international inequalities: the reality of #IR can be said to be performed by powerful actors that can therefore (re-)create and maintain #inequalities. Additionally, inequalities are legitimised and rendered acceptable by performative #discourses that make them look natural and inevitable. But if we are to recognise the power of performative discourses in creating inequalities while avoiding the simplistic understanding that discourses create the world outside of any constraint we need to study more systematically the way performative processes create and naturalise (i.e. make ‘empirical’) the inequalities of our world. This panel will contribute to this task by asking the following questions: how are inequalities performed? What are the discursive strategies enacting (and naturalising) inequalities? Under what circumstances can performative discourses enact inequalities? How can scholars analyse these performative processes without recreating these ‘pre-existing’ inequalities? If you want to participate in this panel please send a paper abstract of no more than 200 words alongside your name/email/institution to Xavier Mathieu ([email protected]) by Wednesday 19th November. The panel will then be submitted for consideration to the #BISA #Poststructuralist Politics Working Group. If you are interested in being chair or discussant for the panel please feel free to get in touch.
