”Bands, Classes, Talent and Power Im sitting here Sunday - TopicsExpress

”Bands, Classes, Talent and Power Im sitting here Sunday afternoon mulling over the weekend events. Friday night lights - the football game. My old high school won. I thought of the avid following my high school has. Season tickets are passed from generation to generation. Stands are full. The fight song, Cherokee cranks up - fans, bleachers, and students go wild with support. Visitors cringe. Saturday night I heard one of our very best regional singers - Gregg Martinez. That same night my wife’s class and my class used that venue to host mini reunions in conjunction with Gregg and the Delta Kings playing at Larrys French Market in Groves, Texas. The night was awesome. Great friends and classmates. Great music. Great band. Only one minor let down. Greg realized he was in Jerry Count Jacksons (The Fabulous Boogie Kings) home city of Groves. He knew Jerrys signature song was Rainbow 65. He acknowledged Jerry and acknowledged the song. He said he would love to do it and believe me he has the voice to do it; but he said he needed a significant horn section to perform that song justly. He had one sax player with him. Greg plays trumpet but Ive never seen even the most gifted be able to play trumpet and sing simultaneously. Still, the night was a profound winner. It could have just been kicked up a notch with the right combination on stage. Sunday afternoon we headed for Pine Tree Lodge in Labelle, Texas. One of my favorite groups, EAZY, was performing. I wondered who would be singing following the loss of their former lead singer and my personal friend, Dave Shaw. He had lost his battle with heart transplant surgery. EAZY had three great singers working with them. Each was incredibly good. Even greater was the band. As I watched each singer separately and working together it dawned on me, Gregg, you need a horn section to do Rainbow 65, I know exactly where you can get them! I thought of EAZYs predicament - what to do for a lead singer that would be good enough to follow Dave. Then I realized, they dont really have a predicament. You see, simply put - they are one of the best bands in this area - bar none. Theres not a weak link anywhere in this band. The lead singers sound better with them than anyone I can imagine them working with. Why? Because they have the right combination of support behind them, making them kick it up a notch. They rise to the occasion because they know theyre working with the best. I dont think EAZY will have major problems finding a gifted lead singer - talented people recognize talent - most want to be with the very best. Just as the football team has its legions of support. Just as each class has its legions of support. Just as each band has its legions of support. We need that support. You can be talented and gifted. You can be among the best. But, you cant be the best alone. It takes a talented team behind you to become the very best. Challenging you to arise to the occasion; supporting you and encouraging you to believe in yourself. To believe that collectively the Power is stronger. Surround yourself with the band members that help you to become the star you are capable of becoming. Listen to those cheers in the audience. Listen to the lead guitar, the bass guitar, the keyboards, the drums, that magnificent horn section! Sort of makes you want to walk up to that mic and take a crack at Greatness. You can do it. It just takes the right Talent and Support. Its there. Reach out. Kick it up a notch. Make the unwanted visitor in your life cringe.
