@Bart Thimbles has nominated me to make a list of 10 songs, using the following rules: List 10 songs which played a major role in your life. Be spontaneous and dont waste your time thinking about them. The songs dont have to be of any major musical importance, but they should have touched you somehow. When finished, list 10 of your friends - including the one who nominated you, so that they can see your list. In no particular order : - Herb Alpert - Rise Always loved the melody as a child, and then developed such respect for the groove and the production as I grew older. This one has been with me almost my entire life, and never got old. So happy to have incorporated it in this years BM sunrise. youtu.be/vltC-O7PDYQ - Pink Floyd - Money I discovered Dark Side Of The Moon when I was about 12 years old. I spent years looking for the 12 single of Money (not knowing if it even existed) because I hoped it would be longer than the album version. When I finally found it in a record store in Antwerp I discovered it was the same length as the album version, so I opted not to buy it, only to find out later that it was very rare and worth a lot of money. I can still play every note of the guitar solo. youtu.be/cpbbuaIA3Ds - Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm I had to have one Trevor Horn record in this list, so what better candidate than the song that sums up his entire career. It took him over a year to finish this masterpiece, and it has been an example to every single producer I know. Electronica, live drums & percussion, Sly & Robbie, a symphony orchestra. And...go! youtu.be/THt7o6dzMuw - Giorgio Moroder - Irenas Theme The realization that emotional music could be made electronically was very inspiring to me. Losing my virginity to this song helped to eternalize it as well. youtu.be/_HvJfeSk1RU - Prince - Creep (live at Coachella 2008) With Prince being my biggest musical inspiration it was almost impossible to choose one song. However, the sheer brilliance of this cover and the impossible perfect execution still makes me cry every time I play it. (I remastered a recording of this event, PM me for a copy) v.youku/v_show/id_XMTY4MDQ4NDI4.html - Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message The realization in middle school that there is a whole different world out there outside of affluent Amsterdam, and the longing to explore that world, epitomized in this song. I knew every word by heart, even though I only knew what half of them meant at the time: youtu.be/4kjeWGQ175g - A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray The anthem of my first summer of warehouse raves. The first introduction to DJ culture. You dont need a band, and a PA and a light show. You just need a strobe and turntables. And flyers. Lots of flyers. youtu.be/gGBlG12bXhc - Donald Fagen - Maxine One of the most beautiful songs ever written and so perfectly recorded and produced. With lyrics that fantasize about moving to the big Apple. As an American born in Amsterdam, I was instantly sold. youtu.be/Nomb3-hIWjA - Planet Funk - Inside All The People Nobody got it right the way these guys did. Unfortunately the band did not last, but the combination of UK vocalist and song writer Dan Black and a group of Italian master producers makes this song timeless, even on dance floors. No remixes necessary: youtu.be/9vYY2F6NeDs - Global Communications - The Way (secret ingredients mix) Upon arriving in New York City in wary 97 , I discovered Deep House culture and fell in love. This track was pretty much the blueprint of what it was all about. I still play it. youtu.be/kLVAiIqMIQc
