“Basically, it’s to recover stolen vehicles — that’s its main thrust,” Capt. Phil Trent said. “However, one of the collateral benefits is we can use it to flag vehicles associated with wanted suspects.” In some cases, police could assign the camera-outfitted patrol cars to comb through specific beats or areas of town where stolen cars often turn up, Trent said. For example, he said, police frequently find stolen cars in Beat 28, which includes the neighborhood surrounding Western Avenue and Falcon Street. Or, if police are looking for a suspect known to live or have family in a certain neighborhood, a patrol car with one of the cameras could scour that area for the suspect’s vehicle if police know the license plate number and have entered it in the database, Trent said.
