(Before you begin to read below, I remind you that this account is available only to those of you who have elected to join me in discussion and debate) Yet Another Governmental Attack on Religion The insistence of government on interfering with religious practice has just added in yet another chapter. The City of Noblesville, Indiana, dismissive of the centuries-long sacred practices of Catholics, has moved Halloween from Thursday to Friday, allegedly owing to inclement weather. That day, November 1, is one of the six to ten (varying with country) Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics, after only Christmas, the Epiphany (Jan 6), his Ascension of Christ into heaven, and the two for his mother Mary. It was for centuries called “All Hallows Day” and of late “All Saints Day”. In fact, Halloween was expressly established by heathens to mock the devoutness of Catholics on the eve of the day set aside to honor the heroic martyrs who through the ages had been sainted for their courage (thus All-Hallows-Eve). That the devout have been forced to endure such a formalized insult as Halloween is bad enough. But here, a city, a subordinate authority of a Nation whose first clause of its First Amendment to its constitution claims to guarantee the right to the open, free, and unharassed practice of religion, is committing the ultimate breach of that Amendment by mandating that All Saints Day be conjoined with same day as has been aside for the mockery of saints and for the worship of the devil and all things evil. Has the city no shame? No awareness of the right of all religions to be respected? I say to the city council of Noblesville, Indiana, “Tear Down This Ordinance!”
