#Bermuda NEWS The Island hosted a key event in the history of World War Two when the captured German submarine U-505 was towed to Bermuda – an almost incalculable windfall for the Allies, who obtained Nazi codebooks and Enigma machines from vessel. That catch changed the course of the War, but was kept under heavy secrecy. The crew came to Bermuda along with the U-boat – and the vessel’s commander, Captain Harald Lange, was kept on the Island for nine months. For the 70th anniversary of this pivotal event, the #RoyalGazette spoke with Jim Humphreys, who recalled his late wife Shirley’s top secret role as a Red Cross volunteer during Captain Lange’s internment here.
