*Branch Change Policies* A lot of you have been asking me about the branch change policies at IITK - so heres a detailed post on it: First go through this - tinyurl/brchng If you are lazy enough to not do so (which is almost always the case) the salient points are: 1) There are no criteria for APPLYING for branch change - as many branch changes as possible will be granted but in *decreasing order of CPI* subject to strength and eligibility constraints. 2) Strength constraints - quite elaborate, if youre finicky, look at the last page of the .pdf file - not much to worry about in the strength constraints thin though, space for about 4-5 people can almost always be found. 3) Eligibility constraints - you have to pass every course. Yes, even the PE101/102 course (the running about in the morning-evening one) and your CPA (both are attendance based) to be eligible for a branch change. 4) You can only get a branch change once. Previously, multiple branch changes were allowed, but after people started bouncing about, the rules changed and now, you can change your branch ONLY ONCE in your stay at IITK. As to how easy/difficult it is, well, it is statistically not so easy, about 40 out of 800 got it in the second semester, Y12 batch. The grade you receive does depend on your batchmates as marking is often relative, but of course, NOTHING, I stress, nothing can surpass excellence and dedication. Personal opinion - keep the thoughts of branch change out of your mind for the moment - concentrate on your courses, If you feel you are compromising your academics for others and you DESPERATELY want a good grade, conscientiously leave other things and concentrate on getting your acads right. That DOES NOT mean you do not enjoy yourself - please do so, youll hardly get these 4+ years back again - manage your time well. Some facts - yes, getting more coveted branches like CSE, EE after your second semester itself needs a perfect 10 CPI. Not impossible (even I could do it and Im no special person :P ) Getting other branches will probably need a lower CPI. Sometimes, you may be lucky enough to get a branch change after your third sem IITK allows this even after third and fourth sem - Dhruv got it, but that was due to a seat being vacated by another branch change out of the CSE deparment, not very dependable Having said all this, dont think much about what may happen after a year. I personally did not think of branch changes when I came here, but got the chance to do so after two semesters and a good academic performance. And also, IMPORTANTLY, be prepared to not get a branch change - it might happen that you do not like a course like engineering drawing (a serial party-pooper for the branch change aspirants) and biology or the humanities courses and hence you dont study for excellence in them and end up getting a lower grade. So be sure that in the situation you dont get a branch change, you wont hate your current branch. All disciplines are lovable :) So enjoy your time in college and what was it - kabil hone ke liye padho or something :P Branch change jhak marke aegi :P *Disclaimer - Wrote some in all caps to emphasize as there are no italicization or bold fonts on Facebook, doesnt mean I am screaming at you people ^_^
