[ ] Bruce Lee Nunchucks Ping Pong. I had a friendly argument the other day with a gym assistant who swore that the video of Bruce Lee playing ping pong with nunchucks is “for real.” I guffawed. I learned how to use nunchucks when I was 15 in the Philippines in my mother’s town Naic, Cavite. There, the kids modified steal nut-crackers with a leather strap or steel chain, so they had hand-sized nunchucks. Insanely dangerous to both user and attacker! Please do not do! I also learned the “hard way” what happens when nunchucks hit a used tyre hanging from a tree. Ouch! If you want to learn what a random bounce means try it! Because nunchucks are hexagonal, they have a very thin surface to strike a ping pong ball. Now, what do I know about ping pong? Once, I was the Princeton University’s table tennis champion (that’s because the really good guys decided not to compete that year—in fact, the two guys that could easily beat me consistently laughed at me whenever I told them I won by default!) and once, I beat the Hawaii State champion in a pickup game at the University of Hawaii. I had just finished the California Bar Exam and spent about 2 weeks eating sashimi and drinking Sapporo Superdry everyday for lunch (the diet of superhuman athletes!), and going to Balboa Park to play with the “guys & gals.” After the first pick up game, they asked me who I was and I said, “Nobody.” When I asked “Who are you?” They said, “Part of the national team.” Whoa! So, after practicing with them, when I got to Honolulu, I was at another level. Looking for a pickup game at the UofH, I saw this guy hitting the ball against the wall. He agreed to play. I barely won 19-21. When I said, “You’re pretty good. Who are you?” He answered, “I WAS Hawaii State Champion.” Ha! So on the basis of my knowledge of nunchucks and table tennis, I can say irrevocably, the Bruce Lee video of him nunchucking ping pong balls is bollicks. But a lot fun to watch!
