#Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is expected to highlight Buffalo’s role as a “location of choice” for #immigrants and #refugees, as well as the New Americans Study the city has launched...Mayor Byron W. Brown is among about 20 mayors meeting in New York City Monday to come up with a plan to push immigration reform in the wake of President Obama’s executive order and Republican threats to try to defund that administrative effort. In a request for proposals for the study, the city noted that while Buffalo’s overall population dropped 11 percent between 2000 and 2010, the city’s foreign-born population grew 70 percent. The study is designed to help the city develop policies to ease the transition for such newcomers and make Buffalo a welcoming place. It will analyze the immigrant and refugee populations, outline current and needed services and produce recommendations on how best to improve or initiate those services. Brown, in his 2014 budget plan, also proposed establishing an Office of New Americans to serve the city’s immigrant population. “Buffalo, like many cities across America, is experiencing an increase in immigration,” Brown said in a written release, “and to continue the economic growth and progress we’re seeing in Buffalo, we would support a smooth transition for the immigrant community in Buffalo and across the county.” The immigration summit is being convened by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as a means of pushing for comprehensive immigration legislation, which has stalled in the House. He also wants to add the voice of cities to the discussion because they are the levels of government handling the influx. In addition to pushing for federal legislation, the summit also aims to help Obama implement his executive order, which provides protection from deportation and work permits to some five million immigrants who are here illegally. Senior White House officials were expected to join the mayors and other municipal officials today to talk about the executive order and plan its implementation. The mayors, many of whom already have experience dealing with a 2012 executive order that protected undocumented immigrants brought here as children, also will share “best practices” for coordinating agencies and services.
