“But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be - TopicsExpress

“But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?” Luke 12:20 Being in the military, I have heard the term fool flung around quite a bit. A soldier who buys a $50,000 dollars vehicle, his leadership will say, “You must be a fool to think that you are going to be able to make the car payments on that vehicle.” As paratroopers, I hear people tell me that, “you must think I am a fool if I would jump out of airplanes.” A soldier will get into trouble, the leadership will say, “What were you thinking you fool, did you think you would not get caught.” I could go on and on about how many times I have heard this term used. In today’s verse, a fool in biblical language was not a description of mental ability or making fun of someone, but of spiritual discernment. In the scriptures, a fool is a man who leaves God out of any consideration. This farmer like we have mentioned thought that everything he had was because of what he did, not because of what God did for him. In Psalm 14:1 it says, “The fool has said in his heart there is no God.” The reference of fool here is not because of what the person has said in the Psalm, but because he has lived his life as if God did not exist. The farmer was a fool in the fact that he did not recognize that his material blessings came from God. He also did not recognize any obligation to God in the use of his possessions. To be a fool is to have missed the point of life and life everlasting. To also be a fool is to completely leave God out of your life. All of the farmers success, we today would often call a success in life. When we take a look at successful people’s lives though, how many of them is either not living a life for God or have a life full of mess? You can see it almost every day in the news. Jesus says, “this very night your soul will be demanded of you.” As we mentioned a couple days ago, Jesus is conveying the idea of life as a loan that must be repaid to God upon demand. Everything we have will one day be left behind. As Christians, how are we living our lives for the Lord? Are we today either using or abusing what God has given to us. My prayer for us today is that we are thanking God for what he has given us and using it to the fullest of His kingdom. God loves you and I pray you have a blessed day in Him.
