“…But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.” --John 8:45 The scriptures declare that when we will not receive the Truth of the Word of God, we do so for two reasons. First, we reject it because we have conceded to another truth; not the truth of the Kingdom of God, but of the prince of this world. Though Christ gave abundant proof of his commission from God, and his affection to the children of men, they would not believe that he told them the truth. Often times Beloved, even the greatest truths with some have gained not the least amount of credit; simply because another truth was assigned a greater value, and thus given greater influence in our lives. Perhaps that is why the Paul would declare that all have heard, but not all have believed. Second, we reject the Truth of God’s Word, because to accept it as “The Truth” we must also acknowledge that which we previously held as truth to be “a lie”. The text reveals that they would not receive him, nor even entertain him as a prophet, because he told them some unpleasing truths which they did not care to hear, told them the truth concerning themselves and their own case, showed them their faces in a glass that would not flatter them; therefore they would not believe a word he said. How miserable, Beloved, is the case of those to whom the light of divine truth has shone, and as the light can not be overtaken by the darkness, it becomes a torment to them who are yet determined to remain in the darkness! Rather than accept the Truth and live, they’re quite willing to play the dangerous game of “Spiritual Roulette” to their own peril!
