But drawing a total distinction between midwifery clinics and hospitals would be a mistake, says Jeffrey Ecker, an OB-GYN at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston who has been practicing medicine – alongside midwives in hospitals – for 26 years. “The point is that it shouldn’t be one or the other, but a system for integrating care,” Ecker says. “There are things that can develop that would require their transfer, and things that arise in labor and delivery.” “Years ago, we demonstrated that it’s safe and appropriate for low-risk pregnancies,” he continues. For those types of pregnancies, midwives provide care, support and education; they can also help women through vaginal deliveries without the need of an OB-GYN.
