I know that autism takes an incredibly heavy toll on Ohio families, and have nothing but admiration for the love, patience, and strength of the many parents I have met who have autistic children. I am working hard in the Senate to increase government efforts to combat this debilitating disease. The government and vaccine manufacturers have worked to ensure that vaccines – including almost all routinely recommended childhood vaccines – no longer use thimerosal, a preservative that contains the neurotoxin mercury. However, as new information surfaces, it is crucial to understand if certain pre-existing conditions linked to autism can be triggered by vaccines. This and other potential public health risks must be vigorously pursued, and your advocacy will help ensure that outcome.
