I would split the franchise into pure 2.5D games and pure 3D games, with both types of game play released on both console and handhelds, using 2.5D games to fill in the time between 3D titles. If were willing to make two Sonics coexist and redesign Sonic, dont waste time doing it like with BOOM, do what fans want and bring back Classic Sonic and his friends old looks and redesign them to look SLIGHTLY like Modern Sonic and co in the 2.5D series to show time has passed but not that much, making sense with continuities, showing you really want to dedicate towards old fans yet new ones as harmoniously as possible. If you want to cater to past continuities you have to cater to the designs of that timeline. In 3D titles I would mix the first Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes the most, make sure the games are serious and plot focused yet have Heroes moments where its a little funny, bring back Sonic and Knuckles friendly rivalry and the characters original purposes and attitudes and such. Avoid a pubescent Tails. (watch the video this part is funny) I would never overpower Sonic to the point Super Sonic is null and void. Chaos was cool in Generations but it was a huge slap to the face. He could waltz along the water, punch Chaos in the head and just call it a day. Sonic was invincible so why have a villain?
