(CURTIS HOLMAN MESSAGE) A little over a week ago, I posted a quote from Dr. Russell Moore. Travis, the head administrator asked me to expound on that quote a little bit, so here is my attempt to do that. Here is the quote I posted. “No where in the Bible does it say that women should be subservient or submissive to men. No where!” Now, when you read that, I know many of you are going to have the same thought I did when I heard him say it. You are quickly going to think about Ephesians 5 and call him wrong. However, if you look at Ephesians 5:22-33 you will notice a few things. I’m not going to post the verses here, instead I’m going to give you a homework assignment to look it up if you do not believe what I’m about to say. Firstly, in that passage it says, “Wives be submitted to your own husbands.” Or it will say something similar depending on the translation you use. Notice what it didn’t say. It didn’t say, “women be submitted to men.” No, but this passage is saying that ‘A’ woman should submit to ‘A’ man if indeed that one man is her husband. This passage is not suggesting or even allowing gender discrimination. Why? Because of my second reason. Secondly, the Ephesians 5 passage calls the man to do something before it calls the wife to submit. The passage calls the husband to sacrifice everything for her, even unto death. A wife will more than likely be more willing to submit herself to her husband if she sees him sacrificing everything for her. The husband is called to die, before the wife is called to submit to him. A man giving all that he is and all that he has for his family is a lot easier to follower than a selfish man who only looks out for himself. Thirdly, this passage shows us what marriage represents. Marriage is a symbol of the union between Jesus and his church. The love he has for his church to die for her, and the honor the church gives him for his kindness and love towards her. This passage isn’t talking about gender relations, but marriage relations. Men and women were created equal in the sight of God. In conclusion, I will leave you with another quote from Dr. Moore. “Some people believe that a huge problem today is that women aren’t submissive enough. I disagree. I believe that women are too submissive. Throughout the scriptures, women are called to listen to one voice. But instead, they listen to the many voices of the world: telling them who they are, who they should be, and what they should do. They listen to these voices and ignore the voice of God in the process, the only voice that matters.”
