~~~ Came Across This Open Letter & Wanted To Share With You Football Fans... ;) ~~~ Robert Reich Several of you have asked me why the National Football League continues to enjoy the tax status of a non-profit when it functions like a huge corporation and its commissioner, Roger Goodell, pulled in $44.2 million in 2012 alone (executive VP Jeff Pash got $7.9 million and another executive VP, Eric Grubman, $4.2 million, and three other executives got over $1.7 million each). The answer is it spends a lot of money to be popular in Congress. According to OpenSecrets.org, the NFL has donated millions in campaign contributions to political leaders in the past few years and spent more than $1.6 million in lobbying Congress in the past 18 months. And its an equal-opportunity contributor. In the Kentucky race for Senate, for example, the NFL has contributed both to Mitch McConnell ($10,000 so far) and to Alison Grimes ($5,000). But an explanation is not a justification. There is no justification for the NFLs nonprofit tax status. Nor, for that matter, is there any justification for any nonprofit -- subsidized by the rest of us taxpayers -- paying any executive more than 20 times the median household income (this year, that would be $1 million). You agree? ~~~
