.. Carpenter paid in beers awarded $12,000. An Auckland carpenter who was given only beers for weekend work and was paid less than the minimum wage has been awarded $12,000. And Kinikinilau Uasike was unjustifiably dismissed when SN Windows and Doors Limited handed him an envelope with $80 in it and told him not to come back, an Employment Relations Authority decision has found. Mr Uasike, who worked for the company from January to June last year, claimed he was paid less than the minimum wage, was not paid for statutory holidays, and was not paid any holiday pay when his job was terminated. When he worked on Saturdays, he was paid in a few beers, which broke the law requiring employees to be paid a minimum wage for hours they worked. SN Windows and Doors Limited argued he was never dismissed - instead, he just didnt turn up to work. But authority member Rachel Larmer found in Mr Uasikes favour and ordered to company to pay him $12,360.25 - including over $4000 in wages owed. In the judgment, Ms Larmer said Mr Uasike was shocked and angry when he was told there was no work for him, and believed hed been dismissed because he had been asking for payslips.
