‘Chiefs are underdogs’ Posted: 25 October 2013 Time: 10:48 am George Lebese admits Kaizer Chiefs are heading into the Soweto Derby as underdogs, as all the noise this week has been about how well their rivals Orlando Pirates are playing. The Buccaneers have had a sensational run in the CAF Champions League, and host Al Ahly in the Final next weekend (November 2). Despite being the most popular club in the country Amakhosi have taken a back seat this week, and Saturday afternoon’s Derby at Soccer City has most pundits favouring The Bucs to come out victors. The truth of the matter is that over the last seven days Chiefs were labouring to get past Free State Stars in the Telkom Knockout while their Soweto rivals were cruising in Africa before returning home to make light work of Golden Arrows in a midweek cup game. Lebese admit Chiefs’ game has gone down since last season double-winning heroics. “We come into this game as underdogs now because Pirates have all the confidence,” Lebese admits. “Everyone else is also favouring them to win the game so it is just up to us to prove everyone wrong. “The fact is that even though we have been winning games we haven’t been playing as well as last season. I think we have been hanging too much onto to winning the double last season and have just had to get back on our feet and start thinking ahead. We need to put in that extra effort to get back to the levels of last season, or even better.” Pirates Champions League form has earned them a grudging admiration from even the die-hard Amakhosi faithful, and Lebese says they deserve it. “To be honest we have been hearing all the noise about Pirates this week, which has been about the games that they have won and that they have reached the Champions League Final. “It is a great achievement so they deserve all the credit that has come their way. “With us, we have been told that we haven’t been playing so well – and we know it, but we are really focused on this game. “Hearing a lot about Pirates doesn’t get to us; it actually makes us more aware of what we will deal with on the weekend. We just have to work twice as hard to match their efforts and work- rate. “We are not looking to spoil the party, we just want to win the match for ourselves and our fans because we have been under pressure recently. #xax.
