Christian pastor from Syria visits Venango County, brings first-hand perspectives on Middle East life, war, and opportunities for peacemaking Presbyterians (and others) in the Oil Region have the unique opportunity to hear first-hand about what is happening amid war, upheaval and factionalism in the Middle East. The Reverend Salam Hanna is a Christian pastor in Syria who now is on a speaking tour through the Lake Erie region, one of twelve visitors to the U.S. at the invitation of the national denominations Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. Rev. Hanna will be speaking at several events in Venango County on Friday, October 10, and we would welcome you to attend any of these to hear from someone who lives amid the countries where ISIS, ISIL, violence and war are =not= “foreign” news. In Syria alone, fatalities total nearly 100,000 people. This speaking tour brings a local connection to major current world news, and it is a great privilege to have this pastor visiting our area. Friday, October 10, 2014 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. Speaking at Prayer Breakfast, Second Presbyterian Church, 111 Reed Street, Oil City (suggested donation if you are having breakfast = $3) 8:15 – 9:00 a.m. Informal conversation at Second Presbyterian 11:30 – 12:45 Lunch and Presentation, Log Cabin Restaurant, 106 East State Road, Seneca, coordinated by First Presbyterian Church of Oil City (lunch is on your own) 7:00 – 8:00 Small-group Conversation at Polk Presbyterian Church His visit to the Lake Erie Presbytery region of northwest Pennsylvania will also include Sunday events: teaching and preaching at Harbor Creek Presbyterian starting at 10 a.m., and a chapel service and visits with students at Penn State – Behrend at 4 p.m. Here is Rev. Hanna’s biography: Rev. Salam Hanna serves as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Latakia, Syria and as the Director of the Relief & Rehabilitation Program for The National Evangelical Synod of Syria & Lebanon. He is a member of the Christian Education Committee of The Fellowship of Evangelical Churches in the Middle East and of the Syrian Youth Committee. He holds a theology degree from the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, Lebanon. Rev. Hanna enjoys playing the synthesizer, singing, listening to music, planning and organizing meetings and biking.
