“Come and see” (Jn 1:46) The award-winning movie Avatar tells of a race of beings that greet each other with words, “I see you”. The greeting implies that truly seeing another is something profound – a deep understanding and awareness of who the other person really is. In today’s Gospel, Philip invites Nathaniel to come and meet Jesus. But no one can come to Jesus “unless drawn by the Father” (Jn 6:44). Therefore, it is really God the Father who leads Nathaniel to Jesus. The encounter between Nathaniel and Jesus is much like the encounter between Thomas and the Risen Lord. Disbelief and skepticism are followed by a statement of profound faith. “Unless I see.. (Jn 20:25) was Thomas’ statement of doubt. Jesus gave him the grace of truly seeing him. And he believed, saying: “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28). “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (Jn 1:46) were Nathaniel’s words of doubt. Then the Father gave him the grace of being able to truly see Jesus. And he believed.” You are the Son of God!” (Jn 1:49). Was his response. There is an African saying: ‘We can only get better when we truly begin to see each other’. Let us seek the grace today to truly see Jesus and to let him see us we are. FRUIT: Father, draw us in prayer to your Son, Jesus. Let us hear him say to us, “Blessed are you because you believe.”
