Commodores Clinch Thrilling 5-3 Win Over Wareham Posted on July 19, 2014 by Colleen Loftus Colleen Loftus/Web Reporter The Commodores are back on track. Their 4-2 loss to arch-rival Cotuit did not appear to distract the team in any way as they took on the Wareham Gatemen. Their sharp eyes at the plate, well-placed hits, and patience within the diamond attributed to the Commodores’ success, allowing the team to come from behind and win the game in the final inning. The Commodores seemed more relaxed as they stepped into the batters box, unlike in their previous outing at Cotuit. The Commodores had gone down in three batters for six innings against the Kettleers, popping fly balls directly to the Cotuit defense. Tonight, they clearly changed their approach. Wareham walked eight Falmouth batters and allowed a whopping 14 hits. Falmouth had struggled this season to drill their hits into open areas on the field. As they managed to read the pitches well, they managed to adjust their speed and rotation to knock out their hits in beneficial places. Matt Eureste (San Jacinto) led the team in hits, recording three singles and a RBI double. The Commodores also succeeded in reducing their number of errors in the infield, capitalizing on the mishandled balls of their opponent. Jake Madsen (Indiana) reached home on an error by the Gatemen infield, which gave the Commodores their 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. One aspect of the game that the Commodores failed to master earlier this evening was bringing runners home from the diamond. Falmouth left runners in scoring position in six innings, while leaving bases fully juiced for three innings. Wareham tied the game up at three in the bottom of the eighth. This seemed like unchartered waters for the Commodores, who recently had been scoring the majority of their runs in the early innings of each matchup. However, Conor Costello (Oklahoma State) changed this mindset as he approached the plate with one out in the inning. With runners on the corners, Costello sailed a two RBI triple to right-center field, putting Falmouth ahead 5-3. Closing pitcher Matt Eckelman (St. Louis) struck out his final batter swinging, sealing the exhilarating win for the Commodores in the bottom of the ninth. Starting pitcher Alex Young (Texas Christian) played six innings for the Commodores, striking out four batters and allowing only one run. The win was later credited to Kevin Mooney (Maryland) who pitched the eighth inning. The Commodores look to create a new, improved winning streak in the next few days as they will play four consecutive home games at Guv Fuller Field. The team now holds a 17-13-2.5 record. The Commodores will host the Orleans Firebirds Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Falmouth Commodores website at falmouthcommodores.
