Commodores Take 3-0 Win in Pitching Showdown Posted on July 21, 2014 by Colleen Loftus Colleen Loftus/Web Reporter The Commodores took a 2-0 win over the Anglers in tonight’s makeup game at Guv Fuller Field. For the second game running, play was primarily dominated by the pitching on both teams, totaling 12 strikeouts in eight and one half innings. On the mound for Falmouth was righty Kevin McCanna (Rice), making his seventh start for the Commodores. McCanna pitched 5.2 innings, allowing no runs. He struck out six Anglers batters, which included a back-to-back pair of swingers in the top of the first. McCanna allowed only four hits and two walks. He was credited with the win, giving him his fifth of this 2014 season. Starting pitcher for the Anglers, Zac Gallen (North Carolina Chapel Hill), was a force to be reckoned with for the first three innings, taking the Commodores down 1-2-3 for two innings straight. However, the Commodores managed to break this cycle and get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Steven Duggar (Clemson) drove a lead off single to center, and was followed by Kevin Newman’s (Arizona) single to right field. With one out in the inning and runners on the corners, Cameron O’Brien (West Virginia) singled to bring Duggar home from third. Next at the plate was Boomer White, who sent a dribbler to short. Anglers shortstop Justin Jones (Nevada Las Vegas) fumbled the ball, allowing White to reach first and earn a RBI as Newman crossed home. The Commodores led 2-0 heading into the fifth. Falmouth held off the swinging Anglers in the subsequent innings, recording seven groundouts, five caught pop flies, and three strikeouts through the remainder of the game. The Commodores tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth, extending the lead to three. Newman sailed a RBI single to left field, his sixteenth RBI of the year. Falmouth relief pitchers Matt Hollenbeck (Georgetown) and Matt Eckelman (St. Louis) did not allow any hits, and each retired the Anglers in three batters during their innings on the mound. Closing pitcher Conor Costello (Oklahoma State) escaped a bases loaded situation in the top of the ninth, sealing the Commodores’ shutout against Chatham. Falmouth proved for the second consecutive night at home that persistence against a solid pitcher was critical to put runners on the diamond. The Commodores were retired within three batters for five innings, unable to find the open holes of the Anglers’ infield. Luckily, the Falmouth pitching for the evening brought similar results against Chatham’s best hitters, securing the win.
