‘Communal forces want to exploit poll boycott in Srinagar’ Give befitting reply to them by massive turnout: Altaf Bukhari ‘NC betrayed 2008 mandate given to it by the City’ Srinagar, Peoples Democratic Party senior leader and party candidate for Amirakadal constituency Syed Altaf Bukhari on Monday said that through an inclusive agenda of peace, prosperity and development PDP wants to develop a sense of rebuilding society together wherein citizens and a progressive government hand-in-hand can give a new direction to the trouble torn state of Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing various door-to-door meetings held in Rawalpora area, Bukhari said the high rates of abstention in assembly elections especially in Srinagar city reflects an expression of peoples sense of powerlessness that has been there due to misgovernance and political ineptitude under National Conference regimes. “Unfortunately this time the communal forces are eager to exploit such a situation in the City to fulfill their divisive agenda. But I am sure that on December 14, people will come out to vote to defeat the nefarious designs of BJP by reacting pragmatically to the realities of changing political situation in Kashmir,” Bukhari stressed. He said if the electorate of the city want to be subjects rather objects of the government policies, then they must give a befitting reply to the communal and divisive forces by responding with a high voter turnout. The PDP senior leader said it is heartening that in the first phase of elections people came out in massive numbers to vote in order to bring a change in the state’s political apparatus. “The first phase of voting will surely set a trend for the other voting phases to follow. The emerging trends coming out sofar from the first phase of polling shows an overwhelming desire for change in favour of PDP across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. I appeal the people of city to be a part of this changing political paradigm in the state by casting their votes in favour of the best available candidates in their respective constituencies,” Bukhari appealed. He observed that people in all the eight assembly segments of the Srinagar City have the experience of voting for National Conference in 2008 and they are yet to come to the terms due to the neglect and inexplicable situation they faced during the last six years. “Worst political opportunism coupled with vested interests embedded itself in the gaps between people who had voted for a purpose and what the NC government actually did in last six years,” Bukhari observed. He said that it is open to all that since 2008 the coalition government led by NC became disembedded from the problems of daily life and from grassroots civic activity particularly in the Srinagar city. “Many colonies in Amirakadal constituency like in Rawalpora, Bank Colony, Qayoom Colony, Al-Farooq Colony, Gousia Colony are yet to be provided basic amenities. While interacting with a cross section of society in these colonies, I found people craving for safe drinking water, hassle free electricity, smooth and better road connectivity, healthcare and recreation facilities. This is sheer betrayal to the mandate given by people to the National Conference. This party despite being in government for the last six years has not been able to address even the basic issues confronting people of the city,” Bukhari rued. He said that PDP is duty bound to implement its agenda of peace, prosperity and development and it will ensure to minimize the gap between expectations of the people and model of governance. Bukhari remarked that PDP under the dynamic leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is determined to involve the citizens in implementation of its inclusive agenda of growth by utilizing their local knowledge and giving them the monitoring rights. He said that PDP proposes to put in place mechanisms that create a greater openness and accessible channels to make government respond to popular needs. “PDP aspires for a participatory democracy wherein the citizens have a right to influence policies and politicians in between elections and not only at the time of elections,” the PDP candidate for Amirakadal constituency. “We believe in a transparent, accountable and participatory democracy. Reduction of corruption, an increase in administrative efficiency and a real redistribution of resources towards neglected sections of the society have been the hallmark of PDP led government in its brief period of rule in 2002,” Bukhari remarked.
