I dont know much about Deng Athuai, however, as reportedly an activist and a chairperson of some civil society unit, he should take this to heart: you DONT challenge a leader, who has been a military man almost all his life, of want of military rigor (courage). Military is the ultimate strength of Kiir (had he spent the same amount of years, as he has in the military, in some university, he would have been a specialist), and also his power therefore. If one chooses the path of activism, one should also know he has chosen to live by the mercy of he who possesses power, however corrupt the latter maybe. This, in time and nature of things, is the heart of the state of nature.
