#Croatia to visit: The #Plitvice #National #Park The Plitvice Lakes National Park (Nacionalni park Plitvice Lakes) is located in Croatia, in the mountainous area of #Lička #Plješivica, a territory of dense forests, full of rivers, lakes and waterfalls. It is an #UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The park extends over an area of 33,000 hectares and includes 16 lakes interconnected by waterfalls. The #lakes are formed by two rivers: the #Beijela #Rijeka (White River) and the Crna Rijeka (#Black #River), which flow into the river Korana. The waters of these rivers are rich in lime salts (for the most partecarbonato of calcium and magnesium carbonate), coming from the dissolution of the carbonate rocks and forming the geological structure of the site. These salts are precipitated by #vegetation and these encrusted plants and bacteries are forming layers of travertine. Over time, these deposits formed natural barriers, growing about one centimeter each year. At a certain point the pressure of the water breaks these natural banks, creating new water courses. This mechanism, common to all calcareous waterways, has assumed in Plitvice a particular importance. Inside the #park you can move on #foot, by #bike, #boat or small train There are also numerous caves of which only a small part is accessible. The forests of the park are home to 157 species of #birds, 50 species of mammals, 20 kinds of bats, 321 species of #butterflies (76 day and 245 night butterflies) and other #animals, including the brown #bear, wild #boar, #wolf, lynx and deer.
