~~DHU Record Review~~ So Long Harry Truman - Danny OKeefe Producer – John Boylan Danny OKeefe is an American singer/songwriter from Spokane, Washington. He is best known for his only hit single Good Time Charlies Got the Blues, which was released in September 1972, and reached #9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and for The Road, covered by Jackson Browne on Running on Empty. Good Time Charlies Got the Blues stayed on the Billboard chart for 14 weeks and sold a million copies. So Long Harry Truman is the title track from his 4th album on Atlantic Records. It is produced by John Boylan who you all know as the manager for Linda Ronstadt who introduced her to Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Uptempo folk/rock song with a catchy hook. They lyrics reflect the times after President Nixon resigned in 1974. The lyrics telling you not to play cards you aint holding. The last verse basically sums it up. And the president thought of Truman When he knew the end was near You can pass it on for quite a while But its true, the buck stops here Don Henley plays drums on the piece and sings background and harmony vocals with Bernie Leadon and Linda Ronstadt. Not a hit for OKeefe but another example of the all in music community in the 1970s in Southern California. Don Henley also sings harmony on another cut from the album called Covered Wagon. The album has Andrew Gold, Sneaky Pete Klein, Bernie Leadon, Don Henley, and Linda Ronstadt. Interestingly enough the 4th cut on the B side of the album is called Steel Guitar with Randy Meisner on Bass, Don Henley on Drums, Glenn Frey on Guitar and David Lindley on Steel Guitar. OKeefe is not on the song at all.
