* * * * * * * DISTRICT ATTORNEY GIVES LACY A WARNING * * * * * * * Bowie County District Attorney directed a computer hard drive obtained by Sterling Lacy not to be copied unless the information is subpoenaed for an investigation. The story was reported in the Texarkana Gazette on Sunday. The hard drive has been a source of contention with county officials and employees as the drive contains payroll related data. Lacy has refused to disclose the contents of the drive, its location, or whether he has made additional copies. In October, Lacy admitted during Commissioners Court that he has the drive and wanted to look at the ‘sins of the past’. He called the files ‘old’ and ‘boring’. Gabe Tarr, member of the Computer Privacy Committee, reported in Commissioners Court the drives contained over 300,000 files associated with two major application systems used by the County; Seagull and Odyssey. The former is payroll and all judicial branches of the County use the latter. Some Common sense questions arise. 1. If the data is old and boring, why is Lacy so adamant about keeping it? 2. Now that you have lost the election, you do not need any more ‘sins of the past ‘ to use as an election tactic. 3. Just what do you plan to do with the data? 4. How many copies have you made and for whom? In the six months the Watchdog has reported on Lacy and looked into his past, we have come to realize he cannot be trusted.
