#DNDSTORYOFTHEDAY How a bard and a warlock killed themselves. (Shared by Graham Ryder) So this was my first campaign as a DM and the two characters this story involves is a gnome bard who uses sock puppets and has a propensity for absolutely destroying my bosses with the luckiest rolls named Steve from Accounting. The other was on his second character which was a warlock and because I was a new DM had no idea how to balance and let him get away with WAY too much. The scenario was that a necromancer had overtaken an island full of dinosaurs and was holed up underground. Immediately after the party got into his lair/laboratory the bard and warlock break off and head straight down to the bottom while the others stopped to investigate things. They both went invisible and opened a huge set of double doors. When they open the doors inside them see the necromancer and he was standing behind his zombie T-Rex. Since combat hadn’t started both players start thinking of what to do and arguing and it was all good fun but after 20 minutes I was getting bored. The warlock finally decides to try and fly up unnoticed and glue a bag of grenades (the fireball spell in a bag more or less) to the underside of the Rex. I then had them roll for initiative and somehow the T-Rex beat Steve from accounting so he took a few steps into the doorway (he still didn’t know they were their). The warlock is now frantically telling Steve not to shoot, however since Steve was the troll he was he decided to shoot; he used a prismatic bolt… He Crits with a 20 so the effect triggers, he then rolled a 7 for the effect and a dimensional door opens to swallow the T-Rex and the look of hope on their faces was so sweet, but the Rex made the save and the explosion wiped them both out, ironically the Rex and the necromancer survived the blast but the tunnel caved in and that was that.
