**DORIS WEBB** Here’s a photograph of Doris Webb, taken in 1967. The counselor’s office, occupied by Ralph Shelby Webb at that time, was just across the hall from the principal’s office. At noon, many of the male faculty members would go there to eat their lunch and talk. Very occasionally one of the female faculty would come in, and were welcome. Doris Webb was there that Spring day, and gave me a great big smile! For thirty one years—1947-1978—she taught English and a few other subjects at Marsh Fork High School. Some say that Doris was the best English teacher that MFHS ever had. I know that the lessons she taught to me are still there, helping me every day. Effective! She had the gift of making you feel that she was talking directly to YOU, never mind the twenty or so other persons in the room… As with all of us, time passed and one sad day our Mrs. Webb was no longer a part of this earthly faculty. Before then, I had stopped one evening at her pottery shop in upper Naoma. Doris gave me a ceramic coffee cup, something to remember her by… Even without that gift, I would never have forgotten such a dear person! It is not often that we are given the gift of having someone so special see to it that we have a really good chance of success in our lives…
