They will join the art magnet students who are part of the FIU Education Effect Program at Miami Northwestern High School (MNW) on Thursday, June 5 for the opening and unveiling of the MNW mural and new student gallery space. The team from MLK Mural led the students in creating the mural throughout the hall next to the gallery. The theme of the mural includes art history, natural history and historic figures. The students also had an opportunity to attend some of the exhibits during Art Basel the past year. MLK Mural is dedicated to inspiring the power of creating public art in partnership with the local youth and support of communities. The murals will beautify Miami Northwestern for years to come. The artist and muralist, Kyle Holbrook, originally from the Wilkinsburg area of Pittsburgh, founded MLK Mural in 2007. His vision was to use public art as a way to reach kids over the summer months to do positive community work when they were not in school. Today as many as 5,000 youth and hundreds of professional artists have shared that same vision with Mr. Holbrook. Murals have been painted in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Florida, and outside the US in Haiti and Brazil. mlkmural. FIU-Education Effect Program In September 2011, FIU and Miami-Dade County Public Schools established The Education Effect, a university supported community school partnership to improve educational outcomes in Liberty City. Sparked by a three-year seed investment from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, the partnership connects the community, schools, students and parents with university expertise, resources and research-based intervention programs to address pressing educational and social needs of students at Miami Northwestern Senior High School and its feeder schools.
