“Day Four” (A seasonal Sonnet) Expanse of lawn maintains a green pretense Even though winter’s been here for a week. Small birds claim perches on the back yard fence, Their plumage puffed—the opposite of sleek. Sky vacillates between blue and streaked gray. (Decision to come later, so we’re told.) It showered overnight; a dampened day Greeted me—puddles where deck boards can hold Enough rain to mirror the mottled sky In their warped curvatures. This is Day Four Of Christmas. Four calling birds just flew by; I hummed along to that old song of yore, As I do to carols learned as a child. This way, the season stays sweet, meek and mild. © Verse-Case Scenario, LLC 2014 ------ A white Volkswagen sedan just rolled by, looking long as a limousine. It must have been some sort of Passat; they don’t sell Phaetons here anymore, and few of those made it off the dealers’ lots anyway. They were a high-dumb marketing idea: I mean, really, would you pay $80K for a VW? We had a splendid Christmas Day Three, visiting with friends at various intervals. Today, it’s just we two and the dogs. I hope to see yet another movie (“The Imitation Game” holds pole position in the decision process, at least for now). One of the fellows at the Penn—a jovial man-mountain with an always-ready smile—calls us “regulars” now. It’s both funny and sweet. Dinner tonight will be leftover pot roast from Christmas Day. Wonderful it was; wonderful it will be again. I may torch up a fresh batch of biscuits to go with it. The “jus” is so rich that we haven’t chosen to gravy-ize it. In any event, it already feels like a day of cotton-batting-swaddled relaxation. May your day be every bit as pleasurable.
