#DearVA, Ive told you quite honestly that I know a lot of heroes and families... that I know their stories and dark places and hopes inside and out. I can tell you about who they are as people. I can tell you about their children. (I can tell you that I am honored and quite humbled to have so many of their stories safely stored in my own heart and head.) I was talking earlier today with a fellow caregiver as we debated strategy on how to deal with you. She has called (a lot... she is very organized - honestly more organized than I will ever manage to even pretend to pull off) every office and person and contact shes been given to answer one simple (but terrifying) question. Will their total monthly pay in December be $68? For any family like ours... when a hero is unable to work and a spouse is at home full time by his or her side... to go from normal monthly VA pay to $68 is terrifying. But, they may be doing it in December... Not only at Christmas, but in the month their daughter gets married. The first letter they received from you said that they were going to have a debt management option (to pay back drill days from years ago... That suddenly they owe you... In the funny VA math world where each day of drill somehow equates to 2 or 2.5 days of VA pay). The next letter simply said that for the month of December they would receive $68. (Most people cant pay their light bill with $68 ... Much less anything else...) And so she has called. And begged. And pleaded. All while caring for her hero-husband and trying to shield him from the stress and trying her best to be a good mother of the bride and trying to keep a billion balls in the air while making endless calls. But... No one at the #VA knows the answer... No one knows which letter is correct. Its like a giant cosmic game of roulette where theyre supposed to wait until December 1st I guess and see if they get to eat that month?? These are the things U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (there are many. - too many - stories like this that I could tell you that are happening right this moment) that make me wonder how committed you are to being a. #NewVA. Sincerely, Brannan Vines
